Licensing & Accreditation:
Poe
|
In 1990-91, Poe-Co underwent the strenuous program of accreditation by the N.A.E.Y.C. (National Association of the Education of Young Children). In April, 1991, Poe-Co became the first parent cooperative preschool to achieve N.A.E.Y.C. accrediation. This prestigious recognition has been achieved by about only 5% of early childhood programs nationwide. |
National Association for the Education of Young Children
(N.A.E.Y.C.) accreditation is a rigorous, voluntary process by which early
childhood programs demonstrate that they consistently meet national standards
of excellence. Child care centers, preschools, kindergartens, and first grade
programs are eligible to seek NAEYC accreditation. Approximately 8,000 programs
are engaged in seeking accreditation.
Programs seeking accreditation undergo an intensive
self-study collecting information from parents, teachers, administrators and
classroom observations. They receive an on-site visit, conducted by early
childhood professionals specially trained by N.A.E.Y.C., to validate their
self-study results. All of this information is independently reviewed by a team
of national experts who grant or defer accreditation. Accreditation lasts three
years. Poe-Co was re-accredited by the NAEYC in 1994, 1997, 2000. In
2003 and 2008, Poe-Co achieved 5-year accreditations.
